School-based Health Center Serves Students, Staff on East Side of Athens

Ashley Soriano

The Clarke County School District opened the first school-based health center in Northeast Georgia three weeks ago.

The health center differs from a nurse’s office in that it is a fully serviced doctor’s office. It offers dental cleanings, immunizations, mental health screenings and more.

The health center is located between Gaines Elementary School and Hilsman Middle School on Gaines School Road.

"Here we can call parents and say the necessary services are right here at school," "ultimately we're all on the same team trying to get children the medial care they need, and this really is helping meet that goal for everyone."

CCSD applied for a grant and conducted a needs-based assessment. The east side showed the greatest immediate need.

“This has been a dream in our community for many years,” says Dawn Meyers, Chief of Policy and School Support Services.

Insurance will be billed, but no child will be turned away if they can’t afford the visit.

Staff members can also take advantage of the medical services provided.

The Athens Neighborhood Health Center provides the medical services and has its own pharmacy and delivery services. Advantage Behavioral Health provides the mental health services.

"The impact on children in school will be immediate and profound," says Dawn MeyersChief of Policy and School Support Services.
