The Clarke County Board of Education appointed Dr. Xernona Thomas as interim superintendent. Dr. Thomas was serving as the chief executive officer after the board placed superintendent Dr. Demond Means on administrative leave at the December 9, 2019 board meeting.

Dr. Thomas has 27 years of experience serving students and communities in Clarke and Oconee counties as a school social worker, assistant principal, principal, and chief of staff.

“Dr. Thomas has the board’s full support to lead the district through this transition,” states Dr. LaKeisha Gantt, board president.
