"Operation Benchwarmers" ACCPD's Biggest Take-Down in History

ACCPD

A massive, multi-agency operation has resulted in the largest take-down in the history of the ACCPD. More than 300 law enforcement members from 23 agencies and task forces participated in “Operation Benchwarmers.”

The effort led to officers confiscating nearly one million dollars in illegal drugs and resulted in the arrest of 16 suspects on federal gun and drug charges.

Police Chief Cleveland Spruill says this is a result of the Safe Streets Task Force initiative.

“When you see incidents like a college student standing and waiting at a bus stop at 7 o’ clock in the morning getting shot in the head, and when you see the shooting involving Miss Ariel Holloway, a young mother, pregnant mother, standing with her child in from of her house, becomes a victim, is killed due to senseless gun violence," Spruill said. "My focus then was to try to increase our efforts toward identifying those people who were our most violent criminals and were trafficking in guns.”

Those captured are facing charges of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, heroin, and crack cocaine. They face anywhere from 10 years to life in prison.

Chief Spruill headed a press conference involving representatives from several law enforcement agencies, including the U.S Attorney’s Office, the FBI and DEA. One suspect remains at large. 43 firearms, including eight assault rifles, were also confiscated.
