ACC Government Meeting About Social Distancing Mandate

ACC Government

Another case of coronavirus has been confirmed in Athens-Clarke County. The ACC Government is holding an emergency meeting Monday evening to discuss possible enforcement of social distancing.

District 7 Commissioner Russell Edwards supports the idea more people staying home.

“We’ve added another case, that was confirmed today (Monday, march 16, 2020) so there’s three cases now. The first two appear isolated so that tends to indicate community spread,” according to Edwards. “So I cannot overstate the gravity of this situation, the seriousness of this situation. You know Alexia, it just really troubles me to see people out partying downtown, packing out the bowling alley and the bars. There’s a real lack of consideration and communication here. Folks need to stay home.”

Edwards says county leaders will also consider the financial hardships some residents will face.

“The mayor and Commission is also discussing various relief packages, you know we have $3 million set aside for the prosperity package., We have money in the government.”

The proposal also makes allowances for regular everyday life and unavoidable excursions.

“There will be exceptions for people to get groceries to run emergency errands, to attend physician, doctors’ appointments, to go to the pharmacy, to go to and from work. You we have got to mandate social distancing.”

That meeting is scheduled for 5 pm Monday evening.
