An Athens man has died from coronavirus. The Northeast Health District is confirming the first case from COVID-19 in Clarke County. According to a release, the 67-year old male died in an Athens Hospital. He was an Athens resident. In addition to testing positive for COVID-19, he had existing medical conditions.
Health officials say older adults, and people who have severe underlying medical conditions like heart or lung disease, or diabetes are at higher risk for developing g more serious complication from COVID-19 and should always consult their healthcare provider if they are sick. Long term-care facilities, nursing homes and congregate living settings for older people must strictly follow COVID-19 prevention measures to stop rapid spread of the virus.
The latest numbers from the Georgia department of public health show 1026 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state, with 32 deaths.56% of those cases are between 18 and 59, with 36% age 60 or older. The department attributes the significant increase in cases from Monday’s 772 cases to improved reporting from commercial labs. The numbers are updated twice daily.

Practice social distancing by putting at least 6 feet between yourself and other people.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Stay home if you are sick.
Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water.
Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
