Athens-Clarke Commissioners Urge Continued Social Distancing in Wake of Governor's Reopening Order

In the wake of Governor Brian Kemp’s decision Monday to allow many businesses to reopen as early as Friday, the ACC Government is asking that everyone in Clarke County maintain current practices.

Athens Mayor and Commission are encouraging residents, visitors, businesses, government agencies and nonprofits to continue shelter-in-place, practice social distancing, avoid outside gatherings and avoid all but essential travel.

Commissioners passed a resolution at their Tuesday meeting aimed getting everyone in the county to observe the best practices to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The measure does not override the governor’s order. Kemp specified that local governments cannot pass ordinances that are stronger or weaker than his order.

The ACC government states despite Governor Kemp allowing some businesses to reopen, the Mayor and Commission still believe emergency circumstances exist. They are urging residents to self-isolate and only perform essential services. Those include, grocery shopping, medical appointments, food cultivation-farming, fishing, livestock, media services, gas stations, and banks among others.
