A hearing scheduled for Thursday as former state representative Deborah Gonzalez and four other plaintiffs take on Governor Brian Kemp.
“When I looked at the election being canceled, I sais number one, this isn’t fair, this isn’t constitutional and if somebody does not stand up to it, they’re going to continue to do it.”
Gonzalez says this isn’t the first time voters have been left out of the process.
“Because they already have taken away the election in Douglas County, another woman of color, progressive DA candidate, Dalia Racine, and the law in 2018 was passed specifically to thwart her campaign because it looked like she was going to win.”
Gonzalez says the people have a right to vote for their District Attorney, in Clarke and Oconee Counties as well as around the state; and not have one appointed by the governor.
“To me, that just raises so many questions and concerns, right? Elected officials should be elected by the people that they are going to represent in whatever branch they are. They’re argument right now is no. There is the possibility that there can be appointment after appointment and the people will never get the opportunity to vote for a DA.”
The hearing, which takes place in federal court, will take place Thursday, June 25 at 10 am via Zoom.
Gonzalez will also make the proceedings available on Facebook Live to anyone interested in viewing the hearing.
