Adoptable Dogs Are Fostered Over Fourth of July Weekend

Athens-Clarke County Animal Services is placing dogs in foster care over July 4th weekend, after the annual firework show was moved close by the shelter to the Athens-Ben Epps Airport.

This year, the annual fireworks show has been moved to provide a socially distant, drive-in viewing experience for Athenians. While this may increase safety for humans, many of the pets living at the nearby adoption center may not enjoy the same level of comfort, as the noise from fireworks can be traumatizing to animals.

According to Director of Animal Services Kristall Barber, many dogs at the shelter will be picked up by foster families Thursday or Friday. Dogs remaining at the shelter will be in kennels equipped with background noise from fans and music, and will be checked on before and after the display. Dogs with more severe forms of anxiety will be given medication.

For canines in foster care, their weekend away from the shelter will be more like a mini vacation—and an important chance to be socialized, Barber says. She adds that hopefully many of them will find permanent homes with their foster families.

For pet owners concerned about noise from fireworks, Barber recommends that they stay close by their companions, provide background noise, and seek prescribed medication from a veterinarian if needed. She also urges families with outdoor dogs to pay special attention to their pets or bring them inside, as the shelter often sees a surge in strays after the festivities of July 4th.
