Georgia Reports Most UI Benefits Ever Paid in One Week

The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday, that it has paid more Unemployment Insurance benefits last week than ever before. During the week of the July 4 holiday, the department paid almost three times the amount for the entire year in 2019. The DOL paid over $148 million in benefits last week.

“No one would have imagined in the same year we experienced our lowest monthly number of claims since 1975 that we would pay almost three years’ worth of benefits in one week,” said Labor Commissioner Mark Butler.

More than 600,000 Georgia are currently receiving unemployment benefits. Since March 21, over $2 billion has been paid in regular state UI benefits.

The department says over 116,000 jobs are listed on its online job listing site, at EmployGeorgia.com. The GDOL offers online resources for finding a job, building a resume, and assisting with other reemployment needs.

Information on filing an unemployment claim, details on how employers can file partial claims, and resources for other reemployment assistance can be found on the agency’s webpage at dol.georgia.gov.
