ACC Police Department Investigating Shooting, Series of Armed Robberies

ACCPD

The Athens Clarke County Police stated Wednesday that they are investigating a shooting and a series of armed robberies that occurred in Athens over the weekend.

On July 18th at 3:40 AM, the ACCPD arrived at West Broad Street after receiving a call about a shooting. A 32 year old man had been shot twice on Harris Street. He was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The victim stated he had been shot by two men in the company of three females, one of whom he knew by the name “Mercedes.”

The police are also investigating several instances of armed robberies that occurred during the early morning hours of July 19th. The first occurred near Dearing Street, when two suspects on foot approached two victims and demanded their wallets. The victims stated they thought the suspects held firearms. A third victim was approached on Dearing Street by three suspects who arrived and departed in a car after taking the victim's wallet and pushing him to the ground. The suspects are described by victims as young black males aged 16-24.

Two other armed robberies occurred in the early morning hours of July 19th on West Hancock Avenue. In both cases, victims reported two men exiting a gray vehicle. The suspects held firearms, according to the victims, and demanded their property before re-entering their vehicle and driving away.

There is a crime stoppers reward leading to the identification and arrest of the suspects in the shooting and robbery cases. Anyone with information should contact Detective Scott Black at 762-400-7058.
