COVID-19 Numbers Down Thursday, Up Overall

Curtis Compton/Atlanta Journal-Constitution via AP

Total deaths and cases due to COVID-19 continue to increase, though there have been relatively fewer deaths today than each of the days last week.

The Georgia Department of Public Health reported more than 2,452 new cases and 3 new deaths. This brings total cases to more than 145,000 and deaths to 3,176. To compare, that’s more than double the cases and deaths in Alabama, almost double the cases in Tennessee and nearly 4 times the deaths there, and about half the amount of cases in Florida and nearly half of the deaths.

There were 37 new hospitalizations.  As of the 19th, the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency reports that more than half of the state’s total ER beds are now in use, 84% of critical care beds are occupied, and 78% of general inpatient beds are also occupied. It should be noted that bed occupancy is not solely due to Covid-19, but also a variety of afflictions and injuries. There remains a 60% availability for ventilators.
