Hurricane Sally is expected to have an impact in Athens. According to the National Weather Service, the forecast has the hurricane moving into our area Thursday night, with heavy rain moving in as early as Wednesday. Wind gusts 20 to 30 miles per hour are expected Tuesday evening.

Forecasters are predicting showers and thunderstorms likely Wednesday. Athens could see 6 to 8 inches of rain through Saturday morning.

The NWS has issued a flash flood watch for the majority of north and central Georgia.

There is a possibility of downed trees due to wind gusts and wet soil.

Forecasters now expect landfall late Tuesday or early Wednesday near the Alabama-Mississippi state line.
