Oconee County Sheriff's Office Releases Body Cam Footage of Shooting

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office has released the body cam footage of the shooting incident on Monday, which left an Athens woman dead. 40-year old Julia Anne Moss was shot during a 17-minute confrontation with deputies. According to a GBI release regarding the incident Moss had a knife and a lit blowtorch. Deputies told Moss to drop the knife she had several times. She was shot after she charged the deputies.

The deputies involve are identified as Cpl. Henderson and Deputy Swisher. Swisher fired a Taser at Moss and Cpl. Henderson fired the shots. He has worked at the sheriff’s office for six years.

A man at the residence, where Moss was a guest, called 9-1-1 after stating Moss stabbed a dog and hit the man in the head with a pipe. Another male resident barricaded himself in a bedroom to avoid Moss who deputies describe as being in an apparently manic state. Though deputies called for medical assistance, medical personnel could not approach Moss until the scene was secure.

According to a post on the Oconee County Sheriff's Facebook page, Cpl. Henderson has worked at the sheriff’s office for six years. In addition, he has extensive training in use of force and de-escalation. He is also a firearms instructor.
