The Athens-Clarke County Public Utilities Department is joining other similar agencies in observing World Toilet Day.
Laurie Lofton is the ACC Water Conservation Coordinator. She says this year’s theme is Flush Responsibly.
“What we are encouraging people to do is to check their toilet for toilet leaks. They can use food coloring or dye tablets, which are available at our water business office, and you put the food coloring or dye tablets in the back of your tank, wait about 10 to 15 minutes, and then look into your toilet bowl and if any of that food coloring had drained into your toilet bowl, then you probably have a bad flapper, and nobody wants a bad flapper.”
You can pick up those free flappers from Normal Hardware or Athens Hardware.
Lofton urges residents to stop flushing wipes, and PPE, or face masks and gloves.
“We are asking people to follow the fours P’s of flushing which is only to flush pee, poo, paper, and puke. #FlushResponsibly.”
This year’s observation includes a new water-themed book club with author Seth M. Seigel discussing his New York Times bestseller, “Let There Be Water.” It focuses on how Israel, which is 60% desert, managed to expand its water supply enough to export water to neighboring countries.
The Athens Regional Library is hosting the discussion this evening at 7 pm. Visit ThinkattheSink.com for more information.
