The Morton Theatre Corporation announcing the first Defiance Award recipients. Ten Athens-area artists were selected in the inaugural round of awards. Organizers say the MTC Defiance Awards were created in response to the Black Lives Matter movement in an effort to amplify the voices of Black or African American artists in Athens and surrounding counties, wanting to express themselves creatively around the issues currently facing them in America.
The awarded projects were selected by a panel of judges with varying artistic backgrounds and expertise. Selected projects ranged from music videos, digital art pieces, studio art pieces, short films, dance performances and biographical works.
Starting March 1, interviews of the awardees and film projects will be included in a digital showcase series from the Morton Theatre Corporation online. In addition, art pieces will be shown for in person viewing at a location to be determined.

Cassie Chantel, Robby Myles, Kxng Blanco, Noraa James, Jas Anderson, Broderick Flanigan, Booker T Mattison, Daisean Garrett, Jason Aryeh, and Camilla Sims.
