ACC Commission and School Board Meet for Youth Development Improvements

accgov.com

The Athens Clarke County mayor and commission and the Clarke County School District had a joint meeting last night.

During the meeting, commissioners and board of education members discussed current youth development services es available in Athens, such as Campus Kitchen and the Leisure Services Department's summer programs.

Grace Bagwell Adams from the Athens Wellbeing Project also presented relevant data about Athens families.

"One in three of these families report being unable to afford balanced meals, sometimes or often. Three in four worry about how they would pay for an unexpected medical bill, and nearly one in four do not have a checking or savings account."

The meeting concluded with a conversation about the need to improve access to these youth development opportunities.

District 8 Commissioner Carol Myers:

"What strikes me listening is the obstacles that keep families from having their kids participate whether they're money, transportation, getting childcare."

The meeting can be viewed on the Clarke County School District's YouTube channel.
