Due to the threat of approaching severe weather, all Clarke County Schools will be operating on a Virtual Learning schedule on Thursday, March 18th. According to a media release from the district, the move comes due to weather forecasts of intense storms which are expected to move through Clarke County in the morning between 8 am and 10 am.
These severe storms are projected to produce heavy rains, damaging winds, and potential hail. There is also a chance of tornados. All after-school activities are canceled. Athletic directors will consult with principals tomorrow afternoon regarding GHSA games and practices. School lunch delivery service (bus delivery and curbside) is suspended on Thursday only.
The superintendent said school officials will continually monitor weather conditions throughout the morning tomorrow. Further announcements regarding school schedules will be made should changing weather conditions warrant. According to the National Weather Service, scattered to numerous strong to severe storms are expected late today through tonight and into Thursday morning. The main threats will be tornadoes (some of which could be significant or longer tracked), damaging winds over 60 mph, large hail, and flash flooding. The hazardous weather outlook includes Clarke, Barrow, Jackson, Madison, Oconee and Oglethorpe counties.
