Five children, none in child restraint seats or belts, were injured in fiery vehicle crash on the Athens loop Wednesday evening.The driver of the vehicle remains jailed. Police say the Dodge Caravan wrecked shortly before 7pm as it was coming off the exit ramp from Atlanta Highway. It burst into flames after it rolled over but all of the children were moved to safety before firefighters arrived.
Police say the driver, Everett Maurice Hackney of Huntington Road in Athens, is charged with DUI, having an open container of alcohol, failing to maintain a lane, traveling too fast, driving while his license was suspended and five counts each of being intoxicated and endangering children under the age of 14 and not having safety restraints for the children.
