A nearly 500-person party turned into a sinkhole on Friday, just after 1 a.m., when the first floor of a two-story house on Magnolia Bluff Drive collapsed into a crawl space, injuring about 25 people. According to The Red & Black, police arrived on the scene at 1:05 a.m., with Athens Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services following shortly after. Upon arrival, units reported having a “difficult time” getting to the house because of people and vehicles backing up the street, according to a press release from the ACC Fire & Emergency Services. The press release also states the collapse was due to overcrowding and that injuries were minor, ranging from scratches and cuts to a potential broken arm.
