GBI Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting in Athens

Georgia Bureau of Investigation

The GBI is investigating after an armed man was shot to death by Athens-Clarke County Police officers.

According to media release from the department, police began receiving several calls about a man with a gun at Walker Park (formerly Trail Creek Park).

Officers then confronted a man with a gun who was inside a vehicle that was carjacked earlier. The man got out of the vehicle and began making demands. Officers gave several commands for the man to put his weapon down, when he did not, officers fired and he was hit and pronounced dead at the scene.

Saturday, officers were called after reports of a man walking around with a long gun, trying to get into confrontations with strangers. A woman also reported a gunman firing at her while she was inside her vehicle at 200 Trail Creek Street (Walker Park). She was not injured. No officers were injured in the incident.

According to department policy, the GBI was called in to handle the investigation into the shooting.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Captain Christopher Nichols at 762-400-7161 or Christopher.Nichols@accgov.com.
