Athens Ranks in Top Half of 2021's Most Diverse Cities

Athens is doing better than most when it comes to diversity. That’s according to a recent study involving hundreds of U.S. cities. Jill Gonzalez is an analyst with the personal finance website WalletHub. She says the Classic City ranked in the top half of those considered.

“Out of all the cities we looked at, which was just over 500, Athens ranked 240th,” Gonzalez said. “So it came in above average. It ranked well when it comes to cultural and economic diversity. It didn’t do as well when it comes to religion and households.”

Analysts determined the places with the most mixed demographics by using five broad categories.

“It’s not just talking about ethnicity, which is what I think most people think of diversity. It also includes religion, socio-economic, culture, economic diversity, and household diversity.”

Those categories include income, educational attainment, linguistics or languages spoken, where people were born and occupations. Gonzalez says there are usually benefits associated with diversity.

“Well, typically the more diverse the city is; we see that it’s good for the economy. It brings fresh perspectives, skills, technology, to the city.”

Houston was the most diverse city on the list. To see where other Georgia cities ranked, or to view the entire list, visit WalletHub.com.
