Confederate monument reassembly underway

A Confederate monument that used to sit at the intersection of Broad Street and College Avenue has been partially reassembled at a new site off Macon Highway near the location of the 1864 Battle of Barber Creek.

The obelisk, made of several stacked pieces, was taken down last August after the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and commission voted to remove it amidst local and national protests on racial justice and police violence following the death of George Floyd.

The removal was part of a larger project to reconstruct pedestrian walkways and improve foot traffic at one of Athens’ busiest pedestrian crossings.
