Georgia to get $46 million for inland port

US Dept of Transportation

Georgia is one of 18 states getting a share in $905 million in federal infrastructure grants. Georgia’s share of the money, some $46.9 million, will go to the state’s Ports Authority to build a new inland container port near Gainesville.

Officials say that the inland port project will provide a railroad link directly to the Port of Savannah, reducing the number of trucks on Georgia highways and cutting greenhouse gas emissions. The $905 million dollar grants, earmarked for 24 projects in 18 states were announced Wednesday by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigeig as part of the department’s Infrastructure for Rebuilding America program.

Meanwhile, the Biden administration and Congress continue to spar over a major infrastructure funding bill that could be in the hundreds of billions of dollars.
