Coast Guard: Capsized vessel leaked oil onto Georgia coast

A cargo ship which has been lying capsized off the Georgia coast for some 22 months has created a new environmental concern.

US Coast Guard officials say that an unknown but large amount of oil escaped from a barrier surrounding the Golden Ray while crews continued work on dismantling the ship. The vessel, carrying 4,200 cars and en route to Baltimore, overturned in September 2019.

In November 2020, work crews began to cut the ship into eight large sections. Originally, the work was to be finished in January 2021, but the project has seen numerous delays.

Earlier this year, construction work caused a fire aboard the wrecked cargo ship.
