Georgia State Patrol Investigating Serious Accidents on West Broad Street

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating after two serious accidents on West Broad Street, one involving the death of a pedestrian. Troopers from Post 32 in Athens responded to the scene where 59-year old Glenn Stevenson was killed after he was struck by a pickup truck shortly before 9 o’ clock Wednesday night. According to a media release, Stevenson was not in a crosswalk at the time of the accident and he was wearing dark clothing.  No charges are expected to be filed against the driver who remained at the scene of the accident.

The death is the 22nd traffic fatality in Athens this year.

Charges are pending against the driver involved in a Tuesday wreck on West Broad at Alps Road that left seven people injured. The State Patrol reports a Chevy Trailblazer was traveling west and attempted a left turn into a restaurant driveway. According to a release from the agency, the driver, 22-year old Charles Smith failed to yield the right of way, causing a T-Bone crash. Five people in the Trailblazer, all UGA students were taken to the hospital. Two passengers are in intensive care at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center. The driver and passenger of the second vehicle, a Nissan Altima, were taken to St. Mary’s Hospital with minor injuries.
