ACC Commission has full agenda for tonight

Athens-Clarke County Commissioners are set to hear public comment tonight on a list of suggested TSPLOST projects.

Continued fare-free transit, sidewalk and bike lane improvements, and an electrified fleet of city buses are among the transportation projects tallying just over $144 million that the public will be able to comment on at tonight’s meeting.

Also on the agenda, the commission will vote on whether or not to extend a pilot program for relaxed rules on the sale of beer and wine at special events, go over an updated project budget for the construction of the Classic Center Arena and review the city’s rent policy for nonprofits.

The Government Operations Committee had proposed a new policy on leasing government-owned facilities to nonprofits after the commission discovered some disparities in the policy in 2019. Under the new policy, some rents will fall — like the East Athens Development Corporation, who will go from paying almost $12,000 to just 20% of that, while some will rise.

At last month’s meeting, the commission heard from representatives of the Town & Gown community theater, who complained that their rent increase could put them out of existence.

There will be two opportunities for public comment during the meeting, which will be streamed live on the county’s Youtube page at 6 p.m. this evening.
