Early-morning fire in Athens claims one victim

Athens-Clarke County Fire Department

Early on Jan. 6, a home off Robert Hardman Road caught on fire claiming the life of one male victim.

According to an alert, the Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services department reported to the scene at 3:27 a.m. following a 911 call eight minutes prior. They initiated an “aggressive interior attack” on the single-wide mobile home with deployed hoses upon arrival.

Crew found the deceased victim after getting the fire under control. Firefighters think the fire started in the bedroom though the exact cause was still under investigation as of this afternoon.

According to the alert, Fire Chief Jeff Scarbrough would like to remind residents of the importance of having working smoke detectors in homes and of having an “emergency plan in place” for potential disasters.
