Rep. Spencer Frye on Compromise Commission District Map

Athens’ lone Democratic representative has created a map for local commissioners. Tuesday District 118 Representative Spencer Frye released his version of an updated district map. Frye called the current redistricting plan unprecedented and spiteful.

“This is the first time I have witnessed redistricting that would target specific individuals that sitting and duly-elected commissioner based on personal feelings and childlike behavior,” according to Frye. “I feel like we’re seeing the subversion of the will of the voters of Athens-Clarke County and it is merely done out of spite.”

He says his map fixes errors in the measure proposed by his Republican colleagues.

“They split up neighborhoods of interest, they split up certain precincts, voting precincts in order to achieve their goals. And what we did was tighten the map back up to where it keeps more communities of interest together, it separates less voting precincts which creates better accuracy and less cost for the Board of Elections, better accuracy when we’re voting. It’s just a less disruptive map.”

Spencer Frye has served at the State House since 2012. He currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Oversight Committee. You can hear more from Spencer Frye on this week’s edition of Athens news Matters.
