The Athens-Clarke County Police Department is investigating the county’s first fatal vehicle crash of 2022. At approximately 12:09 PM on Thursday, a 2002 Ford Escape was traveling north on Lumpkin Street between Gran Ellen Drive and Old Princeton Road when the vehicle exited the roadway, slid down the embankment, and hit a tree. The driver, a 20-year-old Commerce man, died on the scene, while the passenger, a 19-year-old woman of Box Springs, Georgia, sustained minor injuries.
