Valerie Boyd remembered by Grady colleagues

Friends, colleagues, and students are paying tribute to Valerie Boyd, a University of Georgia professor and award-winning author and journalist, who died on February 12.

Dean of Grady College, Charles Davis said in a statement that her “towering prose, gentle spirit and moral compass will be greatly missed by all of us.”
Journalist Charlayne Hunter-Gault said that she is “devastated over the passing of my friend, colleague and scholar par excellence.”

UGA’s Dr. Keith Herndon, a colleague of Boyd's, said in a tweet that “Valerie was a source of inspiration and insight. She will be missed every day.”

Boyd's 2003 biography of Zora Neale Hurston, Wrapped in Rainbows," won the 2003 Southern Book Award for best nonfiction book of the year, and Boyd was named the Georgia Author of the Year in 2003 as well.
