Driver Facing Charges in Fatal Collision with Cyclist

A South Carolina man is facing charges after a fatal car crash with a cyclist on Tallassee Road. According to a release from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, officers responded to scene around 11 pm Thursday night. They say the bicyclist, a male from Athens whose name is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin, was traveling west when he was hit from behind by car being driven by 25-year old Luke Waldrop.

Waldrop is charged with DUI-Alcohol Less Safe, Felony Vehicular Homicide 1st degree and Failure to Provide Clearance while passing a bicycle. This is the 4th fatal crash of 2022 in Athens.
