This year’s tax deadline is Monday, April 18th. Taxpayers needing assistance, particularly those who may qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit, may still be able to schedule appointments. The University of Georgia is partnering with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, or VITA, to help people file basic returns. Anthony Mallon is a professor in UGA’s School of Social Work and Director of the Institute for Nonprofit Organizations.
According to Mallon, between $5 million and $15 million dollars goes unclaimed in Athens each year due to taxpayers not filing for EITC.
Volunteers with the UGA/VITA partnership do hundreds of returns each year. Though the program is aimed those earning under $54,500, those making more can still receive help. Visit www.fcs.uga.edu/fhce/eitc.
