Overnight fire leaves one dead

An overnight fire on South Lumpkin Street claimed the life of one person, according to the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department. A release from the department says that units were dispatched to the scene at 4:47 am on Sunday, arriving less than five minutes later. Firefighters beat back the blaze while searching for a possible victim trapped inside. The victim was found at the rear of the building, evacuated, and transported to a hospital, where they died.

ACC fire officials are investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
