The Oconee Enterprise reports the man accused of killing the clerk of a RaceTrac store last year could be tried twice in connection with the murder.
Former UGA student athlete Ahkil Nadir Crumpton was indicted by an Oconee County grand jury on charges of felony murder in March of this year in the death of Elijah Wood.
In May, a federal grand jury indicted Crumpton on charges of interference with commerce by attempted robbery, murder with a firearm and several other charges. A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s office for the middle district of Georgia says the issue of double jeopardy does not apply to this case because of the dual sovereignty doctrine which allows a state government and the federal government to prosecute an individual for elements related to the same crime.
A second man, James Armstrong of Commerce, has been charged with lying on a firearm purchase form by claiming he was purchasing a gun for himself. Armstrong allegedly gave the gun to Crumpton, which Crumpton then used to kill Wood.
