Public Hearing for Clarke BOE Budget Scheduled

Athens-Clarke County residents will have a chance to weigh in on a proposed property tax decrease in the school board's budget at a public hearing this Thursday.

If passed, the budget will decrease the property tax rate- known as the millage rate- by six percent from 20 mils to 18.8 mils. This would mark the first millage rate rollback in more than half a decade and reflects a similar proposal made by Athens-Clarke County Mayor Kelly Girtz this month to decrease ACC’s millage rate by half a mil.
The school district and county government receive much of their funding from property taxes and are each responsible for setting the property tax rate for its portion of the revenue.

The proposed tax decreases are prompted by a growth in property values across Athens-Clarke County, which by some estimates have increased by 18% this past year.
The potential property tax decrease and additional aspects of the school budget will be discussed at the public hearing, held this Thursday, June 2nd at 5pm at the Clarke County Board of Education office, 595 Prince Avenue.
