ACC Gov Approves Funding for Elections Office, Animal Services

The Animal Services Department needs your help to fill several vacant Animal Caretaker positions. If you have a love for animals and want to give them the care that they deserve, call 706-613-3540 for an appointment with their shelter.

The Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission approved extra funding for the Elections Office and shelter animals in Tuesday night’s meeting.

Commissioners voted in an ordinance for $95,000 for the BOE’s capital budget. The department faced deficits related to the unexpected e-SPLOTS election of November 2021 and associated expenses from the 2021-22 redistricting precinct for the Board of Elections.

The ordinance passed quickly in a unanimous decision under a single motion and vote.

Furthermore, ACC also voted in favor of the $150,000 Animal Services needed for the veterinary care for shelter animals. The requested funding will go towards the department’s Annual Operating Budget and will supplement care and supplies expenses.

While the request passed without disagreement, Commissioner Russell Edwards asks the public to take unfilled positions in the care of animals.

“We’ve got some vacancies that we need filled with Animal Services,” Edwards said. “We’re paying a living wage with this county government, so please apply. If you know somebody looking for a job, please apply. Thank you.”
