Morning Headlines: Primary Runoff Returns and local teen dies in equipment accident

Local Runoff Results

In the runoff for Clarke County Board of Commission District 5, Dexter Fisher defeats Matt Pulver 66 to 34 percent with 1,529 votes cast.

In the runoff for the Oconee County Board of Education Post 3, Ryan Hammock defeats Julie Mauck 58 to 42 percent with 5,668 votes cast.

Georgia Runoff Results

Democrats chose state Rep. Bee Nguyen as their nominee for secretary of state. Nguyen defeated former state Rep. Dee Dawkins-Haigler and is set to challenge Republican incumbent Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in November’s general election. Nguyen served in the state House since winning a 2017 special election to succeed Stacey Abrams in a district that includes parts of the city of Atlanta and is vice chair of the state Democratic Party.

In the 10th Congressional District first for the republicans, trucking company owner Mike Collins beat former Democrat Vernon Jones in a runoff to become the Republican nominee. Collins, the son of former congressman Mac Collins, was narrowly the frontrunner in the eight-candidate May primary.

For Democrats in the 10th congressional district, Tabitha Johnson Green defeats Jessica Allison Fore with 63 percent of the vote to 37 percent.

In the democratic race for lieutenant governor, Atlanta attorney Charlie Bailey wins. Bailey had a comfortable lead with nearly 90% of the ballots counted Tuesday night…with an upset defeat of former U.S. Representative Kwanza Hall.

An accident has claimed the life of a teen operating heavy equipment at a site north of Jefferson.
