The Athens-Clarke County Police Department has released the name of the man who shot himself as police were serving a warrant Tuesday morning, July 12. He is identified as 66-year old Richard King, of Athens.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation after an Athens man shot himself during an encounter with officers from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.
According to a release from the department, officers were attempting to serve a search warrant around 8 o’ clock Tuesday morning at a residence on Forest Road. When they arrived, they were met with a 66-year old man with a gun. Officers began de-escalation and negotiation efforts, but the subject shot himself.
Officers and EMS treated the man on the scene, but he died from his injuries. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Following department policy, the ACCPD requested GBI assistance and notified the Clarke County District Attorney’s Office regarding the incident.
