Athens-Clarke District 2 Commissioner Mariah Parker is stepping down from the Athens-Clarke County Commission. They announced the move on their Twitter feed this morning. Parker’s tweet reads: “Please accept this as notice of my resignation as Athens-Clarke County Commissioner for District 2 effective August 31st, 2022. Parker began serving their initial term in May 2018.
Update from the ACC government:
As per the Athens-Clarke County Charter and state law O.C.G.A. § 21-2-540, a Special Election is planned for November 8, 2022 for Commission District 2 voters to elect a new commission representative. This election will take place at the same time as the November 8, 2022 General Election.
Because the position becomes vacant less than 90 days before Election Day, voters in Commission District 2 will vote on two separate ballots – one for the Special Election and one for the General Election – whether using absentee or in-person voting. The newly-elected Commissioner will serve for the remainder of the current term that ends in 2024.
