One of Atlanta's two level one trauma centers closes its doors for good

An Atlanta hospital founded more than a hundred years ago has closed its doors.

Current owner Wellstar Health Systems recently announced plans to shutter the 460-bed Atlanta Medical Center. It ceased operations at 11:59 pm Monday night.

The move leaves Grady Memorial Hospital as the only Level 1 trauma center in metro Atlanta. The decision sent waves through the Georgia health care system and raised questions from business and government leaders about how best to serve residents in the area.

Wellstar, which only acquired the facility in 2016, blamed falling revenue along with increasing costs for staff and supplies for the closure.
