ACC Police Investigating Break-in at Athens Democratic Party Headquarters

Athens-Clarke County Police are investigating a Saturday break-in at the Athens Democratic Party Headquarters.

Canvass organizers closed the office Saturday night, when they returned to the building Sunday morning to discover the office had been ransacked. Commissioner Tim Denson is a member of the Athens Democratic Party.

“Tables turned over, chairs thrown across the room, literature, supplies just turned over and littered everywhere just making a massive mess,” according to Denson.

Denson says though one laptop is missing, the incident seems politically motivated.

“But it doesn’t seem like theft was really the intent of this, it seemed more like intimidation was more the intent.”

Denson says while he believes that break-in was meant to deter organizers, instead it will serve as motivation.

“We’re moving ahead just as planned and I’m really hopeful that instead of people getting intimidated by this, the Democrats and progressives, people who hold democracy high, will instead come out and say no, we’re not going to stand for this mess.”

The Democratic Party of Georgia will pay for security for the building and Athens Police will increase patrols.
