A congressman from Georgia is among the 20 Republican members of the House who voted against Kevin McCarthy for Speaker of the House.
Congressman Andrew Clyde of Jackson County formerly represented a portion of Athens as part of his 9th Congressional District. Following redistricting last year, Clyde’s district was changed and now includes 13 northeast Georgia counties as well as a portion of Gwinnett County.
The three successive votes Tuesday denied McCarthy the speakership for now, and marks the first time in a century that the House was unable to elect a Speaker on the first vote.
House members are expected to reconvene Wednesday afternoon in their attempts to decide on who will lead the chamber.
