Georgia Supreme Court justice to deliver Holmes-Hunter Lecture

Georgia Supreme Court Judge Verda Colvin will give the 2023 Holmes-Hunter Lecture on Feb. 28 at 2 PM at the University of Georgia’s Chapel.

Named after Charlayne Hunter-Gault and Hamilton Holmes Sr., the first UGA African American students, the lecture centers on race relations, civil rights, and education. UGA has held the lecture annually since 1985.

A UGA Law School alumna, Colvin is the first Black woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court by a Republican governor. She was appointed by Gov. Brian Kemp on July 20, 2021. Before joining the Georgia Supreme Court, she served on the Court of Appeals. Previously, Colvin worked as a Superior Court judge in the Macon Judicial Circuit, where she served on the Council of Accountability Court Judges. She also has worked as an assistant solicitor in Athens-Clarke County.

A former adjunct professor at Mercer University School of Law, Colvin now serves on the Women’s Ministry Leadership Team for First Baptist Church. She previously taught as a children’s Sunday school teacher.
