Clarke Board of Education appoints new member

Taylor Gerlach

Members of the Clarke County Board of Education appointed a new member to fill the vacancy in District 2, created when Kirrena Gallagher resigned to run for Athens-Clarke County Commission. Three candidates were nominated, and the Board voted to appoint Claudia Butts.

"I do think that we need more people as myself in on the board and out here for the community because we have to be for the community," Butts told board members in her presentation. "A lot of our parents and our students don't even know who we are in our day-to-day lives."

Butts will serve out the remainder of Gallagher’s term, which lasts through December 2024.

The Board also moved ahead with plans to rename Alps Road and Chase Street Elementary Schools. Public comment on that proposal will continue for another month, before the board is expected to take action in February.
