Researchers at the University of Georgia say a new vaccine could be the first clinically approved immunization to offer protection against invasive fungal infections which are increasingly becoming resistant to anti-fungal medication.
Fungal infections cause more than 1 half million deaths worldwide each year. They increase hospital costs, lengthen hospital stays and double the risk of death in patients.
The vaccine was designed to protect the three most common pathogens that cause more than 80 percent of fatal infections.
