Back when it opened in 1981, the Georgia Square Mall added a vivacious energy to Athens. Besides people flocking to the mall for the hottest fashions, Georgia Square was a social center -- a place for Athenians to kick back.
However, with the rise of online shopping and the pandemic, malls are closing their doors across the country. Georgia Square is no exception. But with the mall’s slump comes an opportunity to partially address the county’s housing crisis through the development of 1,200 new multi-family units/townhomes.
ACC Commissioner Jesse Hole spoke to Alexia Ridley about plans to potentially revamp the old mall.
