Clarke Elections Director: Low Turnout in District 2 Commission Race

Brant Sanderlin via AJC

Tuesday is the Special Election for the Athens-Clarke County District 2 Commission seat. Voters are deciding between former ACC Commissioner Melissa Link and former Clarke County school board member Kirrena Gallagher. The seat was vacated by former Commissioner Mariah Parker, who resigned in August of 2022. Their resignation was officially accepted in September of 2022. Parker’s successor will serve until January 7, 2025.
Charlotte Sosebee is Director of Elections for Clarke County. She says turnout has been low, but that low turnout is typical for Special Elections. She adds there is still time for District 2 residents to casts ballots this evening.

Sosebee says there are about 7,500 voters in District 2, and only about 10 percent are turning up at the polls.

She says election workers should start posting numbers in the race around 7:15 this evening.
