Georgia Power has begun hot functional testing for Vogtle Unit 4

Georgia Power

Georgia Power has begun hot functional testing for Vogtle Unit 4. The testing marks the last series of major tests underway for the new nuclear unit before its initial fuel load.

According to Georgia Power, Hot functional testing is conducted to verify that reactor components and systems work together and that the reactor is ready for fuel load.

Georgia Power’s Plant Vogtle units 3 and 4 are the first new nuclear units built in the United States in over 30 years. Once operating, units 3 and 4 will provide clean energy to 500,000 Georgia homes and businesses.

After numerous cost overruns and construction delays, Vogtle Unit 3 is predicted to begin operation in May or June 2023. Vogtle Unit 4 is predicted to begin operation in late 2023 or early 2024.
