Vogtle Unit 3 has generated electricity for the first time, as well as successfully connected to the electric grid.
According to Georgia Power, connecting to the grid is a part of ongoing startup testing on the unit. Operators will continue to raise reactor power for electricity generation while performing tests at various power levels.
Once all start-up testing is completed Vogtle Unit 3 will enter commercial operation.
Vogtle units 3 and 4 are the first new nuclear units built in the United States in over 30 years. Once operating, units 3 and 4 are estimated to provide clean energy to 500,000 Georgia homes and businesses.
Vogtle Unit 3 is predicted to begin operation in May or June 2023. Vogtle Unit 4 is predicted to begin operation in late 2023 or early 2024.
