After a postponed vote in September, Athens-Clarke County commissioners will reconsider a nearly 66-acre housing development at tonight’s meeting.
While commissioners will not vote tonight -- a vote is scheduled for early May -- county staff and the ACC Planning Commission recommended that commissioners deny the developer's zoning request.
The proposal requires rezoning 505 and 515 Olympic Drive from employment and industrial use to a mixed density development. County officials say rezoning may deter industrial investment in the area, leading to substantial economic losses. Officials add that the county plans to turn a nearby property, 200 Olympic Drive, into a Water/Sewer facility. Noise and dust levels caused by the facility could disturb nearby residents, according to county officials.
If approved, the proposal creates 254 townhomes with around 762 bedrooms, for a mix of two-bedroom, three-bedroom, and four-bedroom units.
